SCHULL ADVENTURE RACE

Orienteering Running

On Friday 24 of April, the sun shone on the students of Schull Community College as they participated in their second Schull Adventure Race. Fifty-two students in teams of four from first, second, fourth and fifth years (as well as four brave teachers!) competed in the four-part race. It started with a 2km sea kayak around Schull harbour followed by an orienteering course with 16 checkpoints to locate using a specialist orienteering map of the village. Then came a tough 9km hilly back road cycle route before finishing with a 3.5km multi terrain run.
The first prize of 100 euro and the Harbour View Hotel perpetual trophy went to second year students Liam Reeves, Liam Nash, Rory McPherson and Liam Lee. They also received individual trophies sponsored by McCarthy Sports Shop, Bantry, and gift vouchers from Roycroft Cycles. Further prizes were sponsored by Nigel’s Bike Shop and Harris Sports.
Transition year students manned the cycle route, acted as marshals for the running and orienteering routes and did a superb job timing each individual competitor on what turned out to be a high adrenaline, highly competitive race. Post leaving cert students on the outdoor sport and recreation instructors course and members of the in-shore rescue supervised the water event.
All hands were on deck from parents, students, staff and the crew at the Fastnet Marine and Outdoor Education Centre for the event and thanks to all on what turned out to be a highly enjoyable day.
