Parents Council

The history and current role of the parents’ association.

Schull Community Council Parents’ Council formed in 1991. In its Newsletter 1993/94 the council succeeded in securing a loan for £11,000 to fund the building and furnishing of the Technology Centre. Also that year a celebration of the 10 anniversary of the school was held. A table quiz and race night was also held and its first newsletter was published. The parentscouncil at that time was a member of the national group of parents councils known as Parents Association for Vocational schools and Community colleges (P.S.V.S.C.C.)

Some of the aims of the Parents’ Council (taken from constitution)
To promote the educational general welfare and social interests of the pupils in the college
To help the pupils, staff
Helping to make college life more complete by organising various activities
The current role of the council plays very important in the life of Schull Community College. It informs parents the running of the school and of current educational trends.

The council acts as an advisory body representing the views of parents on school policies and activities.

In recent times the council has supported students on a trip to Calcutta, helped with sports day (providing supervision, prizes for students) and fundraised very successful for our new school bus.

March 2008
At a recent meeting of the Parents Association of Schull Community College, it was decided to embark on a programme of fundraising towards Special Educational needs at the college. It is hoped that a designated teaching area can be provided before the commencement of the new school year in September 2008. It is hoped that at least €5,000 can be raised towards the conversion, and students of the college, in conjunction with the Parents Association will assist in bag packing at Schull shops over Easter.

April 2008
There will be a monthly meeting this coming Monday 7th April at 8pm in the college library.
The Association have undertaken to raise the final €5,000 towards teh €25,000 required for the construction of the new Learning Resource Room and they are well on course to meet that target. The Little Way charity shop made a very generous donation of €3,000 and our "bag pack" at Spar and Centra on Easter Sunday raised a further €593. They want to thank the following

  • the two supermarkets for their co-operation
  • those parents who assisted and/or contributed and most particularly to those pupils who manned the check-out counters
  • (Christin Prendiville, Eimear Walsh, Jessica Anderson, Ilana Reeves, Roseanne Morris, Katie and Jack Harrington, Katie Moynihan, Shauna McSweeney, Lucy Hunt, Rachel Goggin, Denise Minihane, Meg O'Connell and Sharon Lucey

Bus Eireann have pledged €200 and the Lobster Pot in Goleen will be holding a Pub Quiz in aid of the fund on Thursday 24th April. So just another €1,000 or so should get them home. Any personal donations should be directed to our Treasurer, Mary Murphy (tel 28466) and any suggestions for fundraising events should be passed to their chairperson, Judi-Ann Riley (35543)
