There is a triving music department here in the college. We are fortunate to have many excellent musicians in the school, playing and singing to a high standard. Their interest covers all genre from Irish traditional, Classical to Popular music of the day.
As an examination subject, the course covers three main areas, Listening, Composition and Performance. It is timetabled as a subject from first to third year and as an extra subject at Leaving Certificate level.
Annually, the school orchestra comes together to provide the music for the Christmas concert and then later in the year, all musicians are invited to perform their individually prepared items at an evening recital, which is open to the general public.
This year, for the first time, the musicians in the transition year, have taken part in the Coca Cola Blastbeat Enterprise competition. For this, the students had to form a record company, find bands, put on a Battle of the Bands and then promote the winner to the next stage. Both the selected band and the mini company get the chance to compete further at Regional, National and then World finals.
This year has seen the conception of a senior singing group called the "Scat Singers". This is proving to be so successful what we have doubled the rehearsals to twice a week by popular demand!
The music teacher in the school is Diana Llewellyn.
