MARCH 2010

1.2010 French Exchange kicks off on 20 April with the arrival of students from Vence, France. The return part of the exchange will take place from 4 – 11 May when 26 second year students will spend a week in France with their “correspondants”.

2.Third year students, held a FAIRTRADE awareness day in the school, as part of their C.S.P.E. project. They surveyed students, put up posters, promoted the event on the intercom and sold tea/coffee on Friday 12th. Thanks to all who supported.

3. In terms of health and safety, the school has been practicing Fire Drills and checking the fire safety of the school.

4. The Open Night was held on Monday March 8th. The night was well attended with lots to see and do! The winners of the Wendy Smith Poetry awards were presented to the audience, and each one read their own poem. The details of this are on the Wendy Smith link.

5. The Green Schools committee welcomed An Taisce representative Ellen OMalley,to talk to the group about water conservation and to check on our progress. She also spoke to most of the 3rd years as they will be the main personnel in next years programme.

6. Transition years held an Easter Egg hunt in Irish, for the first years.

7. The Transition year road safety programme is coming to an end and the group are holding aROAD SAFETY WEEK for the school

1st years have a poster competition to encourage safer driving
2nd years are having a table quiz
4th years are having an emergency demonstration with ambulance/fire/and civil defence involvement
5th years and teachers are having a safe parking competition.

8. The German students are in the school on their exchange and lots of activities are underway.

9. Basketball matches are still being held for junior league.

10. While the group went to Lesotho, they initiated an essay competition between Emmanuel High School and Schull Community College. The essay's were read by the teachers in Lesotho and the winners were

11. The table tennis team were in action and came second in the West Cork Schools Cup 2010. The teams were U19 boys, U13 mixed and U15 boys. Details on the table tennis link.

13. Amy O'Kane will represent the College and Munster at the European Youth Parliament this month.

14. Young Social Innovators had their "Speak out" in City Hall Cork. One groups project is based on "Action against Cosmetic animal testing" and the other one is based on "the Special Olympics". Both groups are active in the school, educating us on the information that we need for informed choices in our buying and in our attitudes.

15.Drug and Alcohol Awareness workshops were held for students in the college.
