The French teachers in the college are Niamh Woods and Lisa O’ Sullivan.Schull Community College recognizes the importance of demonstrating that French is a living language and that all efforts must be made to teach French as a “real” language. With this in mind the French teachers take a group of students to France for one week on an exchange programme each year. The exchange programme with College La Sine in Vence near Nice in the South of France enters its fifth year in 2010.

Please see section on "French Exchange" for further details. The French department in the college, fully understands the need to build students' confidence in all aspects of the language learning process. With this in mind, the Eurolanguages software programme is used in the college's language laboratory helping students to develop their listening skills - a vital component of the Junior and Leaving Certificate programmes.Great emphasis is also placed on the spoken language, with the target language being used in the classroom as much as possible. The oral examination accounts for a significant proportion of marks awarded in the Leaving Certificate French examination, therefore, it is important that the students feel comfortable listening to and speaking French from an early stage.Following the success of the 2008 filming of Comme Une Image as part of the Cork French Film Festival, students from Schull Community College, travelled to the Briary Gap theatre in Macroom January 2009, for the screening of the film “De battre mon Coeur s’est arrêté” The film proved popular with all schools in attendance. The screening of “De battre mon Coeur s’est arrêté” in Macroom, is part of a nationwide tour and marks the fourth year of a partnership between the Irish Film Institute and the French Teachers Association of Ireland. One of the objectives of this partnership is to make French films more accessible to second level students in Ireland. Both organisations continue to work closely in sourcing films for use in the classroom and building resources to help use film as a tool in language teaching and learning.

LE THEATRE EN ANNEE DE TRANSITION

On Friday 14th November, Transition years performed productions of "Cendrillon" (Cinderella) and "Le Petit Chaperon Rouge" (Little Red Riding Hood).

Students did fantastic performances - toutes en francais! (All in French) with Edith Piaf singing "La Vie en Rose" for the great ball scenes of Cinderella!
Colourful costumes, a hilarious stepmother ( la belle Mere) magical fairy godmother ( la fee marrine) and particularly fierce wolf (le loup) made it a day to remember.

Well done! Bravo!!!
