February 2010

1. This is the month of the pre-leaving and pre-junior certificate examinations so all the exam students are busy studying and writing.

2. Transition years headed to the North, and to Cappanalae. Each group spend a week on an educational and fun adventure.

3. A group of students also went to Lesotho on our exchange with two schools there. Eight students raised a substantial amount of money to get there. It is hoped that a group from there will come here next year

4. On Feb 26th 10 students from transition year and 5th year were guests of RED FM.
They were involved in making a programme for radio in a national competition, which will be held later in the year.

5.David Barry and Leo Wolstenholme have been selected to play with Cork County VEC Youth Orchestra. Well done!

6.VEC awards were presented this month to Diarmaid Lenihan, who was awarded for his exceptional Leaving Certificate results. He is now studying medicine in UCC

7.Treasa Ni Shuilleabhain, was recently named one of 20 finalists in the annual Pramerica Spirit of Community Awards. The programme honours young people in Ireland for outstanding acts of volunteerism. She is a founding member of Bantry Youth Cafe Events Committee, has fundraised for the Belarussian Orphanage Project and the Irish Heart foundation and volunteers twice a week at the Bantry Co-Action Centre. Treasa was also one of the driving forces behind the ongoing Schull-Lesotho links programme. Well done Treasa!!

8. Gerald O'Callaghan, 5th year, was part of the Cork County VEC football team that defeated Monaghan in the All-Ireland Vocational Schools final on 27th Feb.

9. Basketball- The U16 and U19 girls teams both made it to the County final this season. The U19 won their competition on a score of 25-24. The team progressed to the All-Ireland quarter finals in UL but didn't make it out of their group.
For the U16 team, this is the third consecutive final they have played in, but they were unlucky to be beaten by Christ the King SS.
The U19 boys team made it to the County Semi-final where they lost to Rochestown.
The U 16 boys team didn't make it out of the group stage but put in some excellent performances.

10. The transition year mini companies were represented at the TY Enterprise regional finals.

11. 5th year LCVP went to Roha, pharmaceutical company Bantry.

12. 5th year Ag. Science went to Connells REPS farm
