CHESS CLUB

The chess club began again in September with a good mix of Junior Cycle students. The club meets once a week, at lunch time on Thursdays. We began this year with an all-boys group, but recently a few girls have joined, bringing our numbers up to about eight regular players with a few more occasional players.
We have entered the inter-schools Scholastic Chess competition , which takes place in January, but to improve our skills and to get used to competing we are holding a club tournament over the two weeks before the Christmas holidays.
The playing is organised by two third-year students, Kyle Lynch and Lee Thurnheer with the help of Gabriel Bene, a first-year student.

On January 21st, the school took part for the first time in the Inter-Scholastic Chess Tournament. We were drawn to play at home against Colaiste an Spiroid Naoimh, from Bishopstown, Cork.

Our four team members were: Lee Thurnheer, Kyle Lynch, Heather O'Leary and Marc O'Brien. We were beaten 3-1, but we weren't too downcast by this because Colaiste an Spiroid Naoimh have many years' experience in the competition and have been winners on more than one occasion. Congratulations to Lee Thurnheer who won his game.

The Chess Club continues to meet every Thursday at 1:15. New members are very welcome.
