Amnesty school group was set up again in 2006, with much interest.
There was fundraising during the year to affiliate the club with the Irish Section of Amnesty International. Some of these funds where used to post 100 christmas cards to prisoners of conscience. The group invited Joan Giler, who had visited Dafur, to talk to our students. She came with a very informative presentation for all senior classes. We also bought amnesty hoodies for all the members.
In 2007,our Amnesty group performed a 4 minute production for the Christmas concert, to publicise the work of Amnesty. Well done to all in the school amnesty group!
Also during the year, the group set up a junior amnesty group in the local primary school and a stall was set up on the open night of the school, with a petition to close Guantanimo bay detention centre.
The students also sold friendship bracelets and Fairtrade chocolate to promote fairtrade. The Schull Community College Amnesty group would like to wish all the Leaving Cert students, who worked so hard for this group all year, the very best in their exams. We look forward to another interesting year in September and hope for many more new members!
With the new school year, we have had many more new members in the committee. Mel Robinson was elected Chairperson, with a new team of helpers.
This year the group are selling tea and coffee at lunch times for students, and also sell some fairtrade/amnesty chocolate. Presently they are getting ready for December 10th the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
1. On Wednesday 10th December, Joan Giller will give a talk to some 3rd and 5th years, while a group of CSPE students will display posters in the hall. In the evening, there is a candle lit vigel in Schull to celebrate the special day.
2. The students are asked to make christmas cards for the prisoners of conscience and link Schull Community College with the wider world.
3. A new notice board is being prepared so that the information that Amnesty is providing will be displayed.
4. The committee are again purchasing hoodies with the school name and the Amnesty logo.
